I have been developing a new series of drawings. They have the shape-based aspects of the geometric mandala drawings and the nuanced layering of the organic mandalas.
In these pieces, I explore the nature of shapes and the possibilities for an infinite range of perimeters and fillings. Choosing to include only a solitary shape on the page, I craft its form intuitively at first, then more meticulously, delineating an angular boxy structure or a curved one, but most likely a hybrid.
I use watercolor and archival fine markers to gradually build up layers of color with a scribbly texture inside the borders. I’ll create varying degrees of opacity, often with the use of black on top. Areas of color are allowed to show through, creating the effect of having a luminous light within.
The combination of outer shape and inner gradation gives the subject a kind of personality or spirit. Some are more dense and opaque and others more ethereal. They are like abstract entities that can partially express the lightness within.
